I made this video for two reasons: I wanted to show the capabilities of “smartCHECK“, the talking checklist app, and I also wanted to learn how to better edit videos.
This is the setup I used:
- My DJI MAVIC drone for the hangar video. I took off and “parked” it in the corner of the hangar in about 10 feet above the ground and started the recording.
- The rear camera in the cabin is a GARMIN VIRB ULTRA 30. It is mounted to the cabin ceiling. The great thing about the VIRB ULTRA 30 is that you can connect to the PMA450B Audio Panel by Bluetooth and it will record ATC and Intercom and also the talking checklist via the audio panel. For this to work you need an audio panel that is capable of audio streaming. None of the other GoPro and Insta cameras I have used could do this … some of the newer ones might, but I don’t know. The VIRB ULTRA 30 is out of production for some time now, but you can find good (and some times even new) ones on ebay. I even saw a new one on amazon recently (March 2024).
- The 360 camera on the glareshield is a INSTA 360 ONE R. That camera records a 360 degree view. In the (free) editor software (i use it on the Mac) you can then decide how you want to use the video – as a 360 degree video, which means you let your audience decide which angle they want to see. Or you use different angles form the camera and make it a regular video. This is what I did here. This means that the video looks like it was made with several cameras. The INSTA 360 also recorded the ambient sound in the cabin … and later I mixed the audio from the Garmin and the Insta cameras.
Software I used:
- GARMIN VIRB Edit. Free software to cut, edit and export the videos of the ULTRA 30. The flight data in the picture comes directly from the VIRB edit software which provides a lot of data for flight videos – unlike other action cameras you can can use “knots” and “feet”.
- INSTA 360 Studio
- Apple iMovie. I imported the two edited clips into iMovie, synced them, adjusted the audio level for both (intercom louder, ambient sound in the background). I also made the subtitles in iMovie
There’s probably better and more efficient ways to make such a video, for example with ADOBE PREMIERE, but I find these more professional programs harder to learn and I have little ambition to become a video professional, it is just too time consuming. So I was trying to find a solution that lets me create an “ok” video as quickly as possible. Maybe I’ll try to learn other programs in the future.
